Artist Statement
I make abstract, acrylic paintings that use patterned mark-making to mine the memory of my feelings. Our stories are comprised of countless experiences, a memory-scape, intangible. I work to capture how I remember feeling through each piece, as if each brushstroke is its own work or art. Meditation and distortion of memory over time are the keys to this body of work. How do we navigate the edited possibilities, the shifted opportunities and brilliance of naivete? This work is both impassioned, buzzing with prospect, but quiet, still and encased.
Who am I?
My name is Carl, and I am an artist, husband, dog lover, coffee drinker, music enthusiast, traveler and thinker. I earned my BFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012. Between then and now, I spent my time working in non-profit education and administration. My passion for creation comes from being a younger brother, feeling like I needed to be smarter and more creative than my sibling to fit into the conversations around the dinner table. Even now, I often come up short.
I enjoy traveling, eating and stumbling on wonders in my back yard and around the world. After a taking a break from being a creative, I am back with a lot of ideas that need to find their home on a “canvas” or at least outside of my own mind.
